P.E.O. Record
Together We Can...
You may be familiar with Bil Keane’s "Family Circus," a cartoon with a simple philosophy of life. The inspiration for this cartoon comes from his five children who not only provide a chuckle but some wonderful insights. For example, recall the cartoon in which Billy’s grandmother is speaking to him and says, "Always remember, Billy, that GOALS begin with GO." What a wise woman. Setting goals isn’t the end, but the beginning of the process.
It has been said, "If you don’t have a goal — you won’t reach it!" Goals encourage us to think beyond the present, to plan for the future and push ourselves further than we ever thought we could go. Possibilities for chapter growth are endless when goals are set.
Survey results have told us that our organization needs to attract younger women. P.E.O. has set goals to challenge its membership so that our organization will have a continued influence in the lives of women of all ages. We’ve improved our external image with vibrant, youthful colors, redesigned The Record, provided a bright informal logo, and commissioned the book "The Girl Who Reached for the Star," the story of a young girl’s dreams and goals. Through this book P.E.O. is introduced to the next generation. Some local chapters have placed the recently released book in libraries or given the book to young women, their daughters and granddaughters, too. Your chapter might want to consider this outreach. It’s Okay to Talk about P.E.O.!
The proposed sixth project, to be presented for approval at the 2009 Convention of International Chapter, is another opportunity for public recognition of P.E.O. and our good work. Through this proposed project chapters can build mentoring relationships with outstanding young women who will think well of P.E.O. and one day may join with us.
How often have you heard surprise when you mention that we have assisted more than 78,200 women with over $180 million dollars in educational aid? Not only are those who hear this surprised and impressed, but usually it’s the first time they have ever heard about P.E.O., a 139 year old organization. Tell your friends about our philanthropies and the generous support we give to women. It’s Okay! Look for friends who are five years younger than you are. We all know someone a few years younger and this is how chapters achieve a balanced, diverse group of ages. When you are asked by an interested friend or acquaintance about joining P.E.O. explain that five members are required to sponsor a new member; this is not unlike other community based organizations. If there is an opportunity, invite her to meet the others.
Build enthusiasm for P.E.O. If you aren’t enthusiastic, who will be? These initiatives are great opportunities to talk publicly about P.E.O. It’s Okay! Take an active role, a leadership role in chapter membership growth, be the first to enlist others to plan and set goals. It’s up to you. Get ready, get set, GO!
