P.E.O. Record
Together We Can...
Bishop Canon said, “Our inspiration is from the past; but our duty lies in the present, and unless we exercise that duty fully and completely, there is no hope for those who follow us in the future.” Words spoken many years ago but profoundly appropriate for P.E.O.s of the 21st Century.
We’ve learned from the membership survey that our members think a stronger sisterhood with more relevance for contemporary women can be achieved if streamlining of chapter procedures and processes are implemented. The committees appointed at the beginning of the biennium have recommended changes. Amendments to implement these changes will be considered at the 2009 Convention of International Chapter in San Diego and are included in this issue.
When you read the amendments keep in mind that the goal is to simplify, to make our work more compatible with the lifestyle of busy women and relevant in this era. Concentrate on the larger concepts that the amendments present; for instance, consider the idea of a simplified process to transfer membership from one chapter to another (see chart page 81), a streamlined voting procedure for new members, reduction in number of chapter officers, a time-saving sign-in sheet, or taking action on reports when given.
What will be the benefit of these proposals? Is one benefit a shorter business meeting with more time to be supportive of each other building closer bonds of sisterhood? Is another benefit the possibility that we will be more attractive to younger women? Is another benefit that members will step up quickly to serve as an officer because unnecessary work has been eliminated?
It has been said that, “Without change there is no growth.” Unless we’re ready to accept that change is essential for the future growth of P.E.O. and the mission of educating women, we will stagnate and become an organization that is content only with what we have accomplished. Our history will then be written in a few short words. The opportunity to make a difference in the structure of P.E.O., to turn a corner depends on us, how forward thinking we are, how committed we are to holding dear those things of importance while moving toward a stronger more viable organization. We can modify our work without sacrificing traditions, principles or the core values of P.E.O. Our strength is not in forms and procedure but in the bonds of sisterhood.
“And will you allow me to say a word about precedents, about what has been? Do not try to preserve them because of sentiment, for new times demand new needs. Evolution and growth means life to organizations as well as individuals. Take this thought to your chapters, and please remember that true loyalty to those gone before you in P.E.O. to the Founders, if you will, lies in improving the unfinished structure they bequeathed to you, for P.E.O. is only yet in its beginning.”
